Police are continuing to investigate after multiple Pride flagpoles were cut down and vandalized at schools across Perth County over the weekend, incidents that are now prompting strong reaction from Pride organizations and school officials across the region.
Perth County Ontario Provincial Police say they were called to several school properties between June 13 and 14, 2026 after flagpoles were discovered damaged, including locations along Perth Line 72, Perth Road 131, Perth Line 43 and Perth Road 135. Police are now looking for two male persons of interest seen wearing all black clothing and face coverings, and carrying a saw, while operating an ATV in the area.
For Stratford-Perth Pride, the impact goes beyond property damage. In a public statement, the organization says Pride flags are often one of the only visible signals to young people that they are safe and accepted in their schools and communities.
The group says when those symbols are targeted, "young people understand the message immediately," adding that it also affects parents, teachers and 2SLGBTQIA+ people who have faced harassment and questions about belonging. Stratford-Perth Pride says these incidents come during Pride Month and follow similar acts elsewhere in Southwestern Ontario, and that while police will handle the investigation, the broader concern is the climate that allows these actions to happen.
Huron County Pride is also speaking out, calling the incidents targeted and hate-motivated. In a statement, the organization says flying the Pride flag represents "safer, accepting and inclusive spaces” and that it serves as a reminder that “everyone belongs in a community."
The Avon Maitland District School Board has also condemned the vandalism, calling it a targeted and hateful act. The board says the damaged flagpoles carried both the Canadian and Pride flags, and that the incident has forced schools to divert resources that should be going into classrooms. Officials say they are working with police and have provided video footage as part of the investigation.
Despite the damage, both the school board and advocacy groups say the flags will be replaced and support for students will continue, with a focus now on ensuring schools remain safe and inclusive spaces.
Police are asking anyone with information to contact Perth County OPP.
