Brockton appoints newest member of council

The Municipality of Brockton appointed Mike Crawford to fill its vacant council seat on Thursday night.

The seat was held by former Councillor Carl Kuhnke, and declared vacant on November 25, 2025.

Six candidates put their name forward to fill the vacancy, with council voting on its newest member at a special meeting on Thursday.

The vote was split between Crawford, the owner of Northern Points Roofing and Exteriors, and Katie Rice, a Radiation Protection Technician at Bruce Power. After two rounds of voting, each divided three to three, the next member of council was chosen by lot, with Crawford's name being selected.

Crawford told council he was motivated by a love of the community of Brockton, and planned to focus on fiscal responsibility.

"My reason for applying is simple: I'm proud of our community and the people who live here, I want to continue to help Brockton grow in a responsible and sustainable way," he said. "I recognize that costs are continually rising, my main focus will be finding ways to stretch our resources while keeping expenses as low as possible. As a young father and husband, managing two budgets both at home and in my business, I know how critical it is to make every dollar count."

Mayor Chris Peabody thanked all who applied and said he looked forward to working with Crawford for the next nine months.

"I'd like to thank all the candidates, it's always an act of courage to put your name forward in the community," he said. "I'd like to congratulate Councillor Crawford on his victory. We certainly look forward to representing us on Brockton council and look forward to your perspective and contributions."

The next municipal elections will be held October 26, 2026.

Due to a light agenda, the council meeting for January 27 was cancelled. Crawford's first meeting of council will be February 10.
