Following a week of warm weather, heavy rainfall and in some areas of midwestern Ontario, flooding, Environment Canada is calling for a return of winter weather to start the weekend.
The national weather forecaster upgraded a special weather statement to a yellow-level winter storm warning for Huron County, Perth County, southern Grey County, southern Bruce County, and northern Wellington County on Friday, calling for snow and strong winds. A special weather statement is in effect for Bruce Peninsula and northern Grey County.
The snow will begin Friday morning, with 10 to 20 centimetres expected throughout the day. Snow may also be mixed with rain at times as temperatures should warm in the afternoon.
Winds are forecast to gust between 50 and 70 km/h. Near Lake Huron wind gusts near 90 km/h will be possible.
"The freshly fallen snow and strong winds will lead to widespread blowing snow tonight, particularly over exposed areas," Environment Canada said. "Travel will likely be challenging. Visibility will likely be suddenly reduced to near zero at times. Road closures are possible. Local utility outages are likely."
The snowy conditions have led to the cancellation of all school buses in Grey-Bruce and rural parts of Huron-Perth. The full list of cancellations can be found by clicking here.
The weather is expected to ease as the system moves out of the province Saturday morning.
