Kincardine approves commemorative crosswalk for veterans

Kincardine council has approved a request from the local Royal Canadian Legion to install a commemorative crosswalk to honour the service and sacrifice of veterans.

The "Lest We Forget" crosswalk will be installed at the west-side crossing of Lambton Street and Huron Terrace, the intersection nearest to the Royal Canadian Legion Kincardine Branch 183 building.

Teri Leslie, President of the Legion, said other communities like Kitchener and St. Thomas have installed such crosswalks, as it's a way to keep remembrance alive year round.

"We feel it is simple, respectful yet impactful," she told council. "A crosswalk is something we all use: kids walking to school, parents walking uptown, seniors popping into the Legion for some camraderie. Each time someone steps onto it or pulls their car up to it, they are gently reminded that the freedoms we enjoy were earned by others."

As part of the motion to approve, council amended the 2026 budget, using $9,800 from the Contingency Reserve to fund the crosswalk.

"Council is proud to support the creation of this commemorative crosswalk in recognition of the brave veterans who served our country," said Mayor Ken Craig. "It is a small but meaningful way to honour the sacrifices made by those who fought to protect the freedoms we enjoy today. It stands as a visible reminder of our community’s deep respect and gratitude for those who served."

The design includes two soldiers on a backdrop of white and grey stripes, with the words "Lest We Forget" in red at each end. It will be installed at the west side crossing of Lambton Street and Huron Terrace.

The goal is to have it ready for the official 100-year birthday of the Legion on July 17.
