A popular fundraiser will be supported by a unique partnership involving local schools and the Windsor Spitfires.
The Windsor Regional Hospital (WRH) Foundation and the Spitfires officially launched the program, School Helps, at the WFCU Centre on Tuesday morning.
School Helps is a fundraising program supporting the 17th edition of Hats On For Healthcare, presented by Greg Monforton and Partners.
WRH Foundation Executive Director Cristina Naccarato said Spitfire players will be placed with school groups, youth hockey clubs, and organizations as co-captains, engaging in friendly competition with other teams to raise money.
"As co-captains, Windsor Spitfire players will provide encouragement and leadership to their paired youth teams and student groups to help them reach their fundraising goals," said Naccarato.
Spitfires Video Coach and Communications Director Nick Welsh added that the program will be the latest in a long line of charitable projects handled by the team.
"Here in Windsor, being a Spitfire means not only being a great player on the ice, but it means being an even better person," said Welsh. "It means showing up for your community, giving back, and understanding the impact you can have beyond the rink."
Naccarato said that a new twist to this year's fundraiser is allowing the donors to decide where their contributions will go.
"You can choose from 40 hospital programs that have touched your life, or the lives of your loved ones," said Naccarato. "Whether it's supporting the NICU, mental health services, pediatrics, or cardiology, your contribution stays right here in Windsor-Essex."
The fundraiser runs throughout March.
Among upcoming events tied to the fundraiser are Hat Day on March 11, when participants will be encouraged to wear their favourite hats and donate, and the Hatsquerade Happy Hour on April 16 at the St. Clair Centre for the Arts.
