Locals can help create community quilt honouring Black History Month

Bruce County residents can be a part of a new art initiative that recognizes the contributions, history, and rights of people of African descent worldwide.

The Bruce County Museum and Cultural Centre will host a community art quilt project on February 28. The initiative, led by renowned artist, author, and President’s Poet Nadine Williams, is being conducted in honour of Black History Month and the International Decade for People of African Descent. Funding for it is being provided by Community Foundation Grey Bruce.

Community members aged eight and older will be able to develop their own 8.5-by-11-inch art tile or contribute ideas for a tile that will then be designed and stitched together by Nadine Williams Collective to form a unified quilt.

"Through this hands-on workshop, participants will gain an introductory understanding of the decade and its themes, while also engaging with Williams’ ongoing work, including her poem The Fabric of Our Being," the museum said in a statement . "The program encourages reflection on identity, heritage, and the personal stories that shape who we are."

All materials needed to create a tile will be provided and no prior art experience is needed. The finished quilt will be unveiled at a special event scheduled for August 2 and will become a permanent installation at the museum.

Those interested in participating in the free community art quilt project are asked to register through the museum website as space is limited.
