Rayjon co-founder, president remembered for social activism

A Sarnia man is being remembered locally for dedicating nearly 40 years to the betterment of communities on a Caribbean island.

Rayjon Share Care Sarnia Executive Director Allison Kingston said John Barnfield, the co-founder and president of the organization, passed away Monday, January 5, at the age of 79.

"John started Rayjon, he's the John in the name, he started with Ray Wyrzykowski in 1986," said Kingston. "He and his wife, Maggy, had come from an awareness trip in Haiti. When they got back, they knew even though they're from the small town of Sarnia, they could make a difference internationally."

Kingston said Barnfield spent 39 years working to improve the lives of people in Haiti, the Dominican Republic and Sarnia-Lambton.

"They took numerous people from Sarnia-Lambton, and Canada, to make connections themselves... and then over the years through various programs [they] made such an impact in education, health and women's empowerment," Kingston said.

She said Barnfield organized learning sessions at local refineries and other venues, inspiring people to care about and support community members thousands of miles away.

"We are such global citizens, and he really recognized that. He recognized the importance of connection, and not just working together, but creating relationships with anyone and everyone," Kingston said.

While continuing his position on the board as president of Rayjon, Kingston said Barnfield shifted his focus in recent years to affordable housing in Sarnia-Lambton.

"He made such an impact on so many people's lives," she said. "I had a call with one of our partners this morning and I know everyone in the office there was grieving and celebrating his life and here, [it's] the same thing. He's made such an impact and such a meaningful difference in individuals lives. Many supporters have gone on to do amazing things because of his trip leading."

Under Barnfield's guidance, Kingston said Rayjon has grown into a well-respected organization known for its impactful programs in education, nutrition, and community development.

She says they'll honour his memory by continuing to advance Rayjon's mission, carrying forward the partnerships, programs, and values he dedicated his life to building.
