SCVA offers candlelight winter hiking

Saugeen Valley Conservation Authority is celebrating a strong community turnout after roughly 300 people gathered for a candlelit night hike beneath the Wolf Moon at Sulphur Spring Conservation Area.

The evening event, held January 2, offered participants a rare chance to experience the conservation area after dark. Trails were gently illuminated with candlelight, encouraging visitors to leave headlamps behind and immerse themselves in the natural sights and sounds of a winter night. The quiet setting, paired with moonlight reflecting off the snowy landscape, created a peaceful and reflective atmosphere for hikers of all ages.

SVCA credited the success of the night hike to the dedication of staff and their family members who volunteered their time to help guide participants and ensure the event ran smoothly. Their efforts helped provide a safe, welcoming environment throughout the evening.

Building on the popularity of the Wolf Moon hike, Saugeen Valley Conservation Authority has announced plans for another candlelit evening walk later this month. The upcoming Snow Moon Night Hike is scheduled for Saturday, January 31, at the same location, Sulphur Spring Conservation Area on Grey Road 28 near Hanover. The first group will head out at 7 p.m., with the final departure set for 7:30 p.m.

Hikers will leave in staggered groups and are free to move along the trail at their own pace. The loop is approximately one to one-and-a-half kilometres in length and can take anywhere from half an hour to 90 minutes to complete, depending on walking speed and how often participants stop to take in the surroundings.

There is no cost to attend, and snowshoes are permitted but not necessary. Families with very young children are advised that the trails are not packed firm and may wish to bring a toboggan. Dogs will not be permitted during the event, despite being allowed on leashes at SVCA conservation areas during regular hours.

SVCA says events like these reflect its commitment to sharing local conservation lands and providing opportunities for residents to connect with nature in new and memorable ways. The Snow Moon Night Hike is weather-dependent, and any cancellations will be announced on the Saugeen Conservation Authority website.
