South Huron has tapped the company that will built the brand new fire station in Dashwood.
Council awarded the construction tender to Agri-Urban Building Inc. for over $4.1 million with taxes included. The bid was the lowest of 14 submitted.
The current Dashwood station was built in 1954, and the fire department has long since outgrown it. There are no showers on site for decontamination and barely any parking available.
Councillor Aaron Neeb said this new station has been a long time coming and will serve the community well.
"When I first got on council, there were discussions from five years prior to that, in 2012, about the replacement of the Dashwood fire station," he said. "This has been 14 years in the making. A lot of work has gone into this process... this is a fire station for the entire municipality, this is not just Dashwood's fire station."
Because of the tender results, council also approved a budget amendment for an additional $618,000 for the capital project.
Neeb noted that if the municipality's 2025 Development Charges Study is approved, around 22 per cent of the cost would be funded by Development Charges.
The three bay station will built at 177 Centre Street South, with completion anticipated in April 2027.
