The Port of Goderich welcomed its first ship of 2026 this week, meaning Town officials held their annual Top Hat Ceremony.
The first captain to dock in the port and sign the ceremonial hat was Joe Costello of the Algoma Intrepid.
"This special moment marks the beginning of another shipping season and underscores the vital role our port plays in supporting local jobs, industry and economic growth within our community," said Mayor Trevor Bazinet. "The Top Hat Ceremony is more than a tradition, it is a celebration of our rich maritime heritage and a reminder of the strong connection between our harbour, our industries and the Great Lakes shipping community."
The ceremony dates back to 1932, honouring the first captain to arrive after the Welland Canal opens.
The tradition had some novelty this year, as it was the first to involve the town's new top hat. The previous one was donated to the Huron County Museum last summer after serving in the ceremony for 93 years.
The Port of Goderich welcomed almost 194 ships last year and Bazinet said they hope to clear 200 in 2026.
