Wiarton Willie Festival among Top 100

The Wiarton Willie Festival has earned provincial recognition as one of the Top 100 Festivals and Events in Ontario.

The announcement was made on February 26 by the Town of South Bruce Peninsula, which shared that the honour was awarded by Festivals and Events Ontario (FEO). Entries from FEO members were submitted in the fall of 2025 and evaluated by an independent panel of judges.

The accolade follows a landmark year for the festival, which recently marked its 70th anniversary, celebrating seven decades of winter tradition and community spirit in Wiarton.

Organizers said the festival’s purpose is to unite residents and visitors, foster civic pride, and showcase the area’s culture and heritage. Staged in the middle of winter, the event plays a key role in attracting visitors during the off-season, providing an economic boost to local hotels, shops, and restaurants during one of the quietest months of the year.

Planning and hosting the festival involves extensive participation from volunteers, community organizations, and local schools. The celebration also serves as a homecoming for many families and friends, supports fundraising efforts, and offers entertainment geared toward all ages. As a result, it continues to be a significant cultural, social, and economic contributor to the broader community.

Mayor Jay Kirkland reflected on the milestone year and the new recognition.

“Celebrating 70 years of Wiarton Willie is an incredible milestone for our community,” said Mayor Jay Kirkland. “To now see the festival recognized as one of Ontario’s Top 100 Festivals and Events is a testament to the dedication of our volunteers, sponsors, staff, and residents who work tirelessly to make this event such a success. Wiarton Willie is more than a tradition; it’s a symbol of our community pride and resilience.”

Danielle Edwards, Manager of Economic Development and Communications for the Town of South Bruce Peninsula, emphasized the festival’s broader economic influence.

“The Wiarton Willie Festival plays a vital role in supporting our local economy during the winter season. It draws visitors from across the province and beyond, filling our restaurants, shops, and accommodations at a time when businesses need it most. Being recognized by Festivals & Events Ontario reinforces the significance of this event, not only as a cherished community celebration but as an important economic driver for South Bruce Peninsula.”

The Town extended its congratulations and appreciation to the many volunteers, sponsors, partners, and attendees whose support over the past 70 years helped secure the provincial honour. More details about the festival can be found at www.wiartonwillie.com.
