Stratford is mourning the loss of one of its most beloved entrepreneurs and community members. Rheo Thompson, founder of Rheo Thompson Candies, passed away in the early morning hours of Saturday, June 7, 2025, at Stratford General Hospital. He was 82 years old.
Born in Port Arthur, Thompson began crafting chocolates in the basement of his home in 1969, gradually growing the venture into a Stratford institution. Rheo Thompson Candies, located on Albert Street in Stratford, has been a staple of the city for decades, known especially for its Mint Smoothies, which helped the shop earn a loyal following both locally and beyond.
Thompson ran the business for 35 years before passing it on to new ownership. In May 2025, the store changed hands for just the second time in its history. Beyond his success in business, Thompson was known for his generous spirit and involvement in community life. He was a longtime member of the Stratford Rotary Club, the Army, Navy and Air Force Veterans (ANAF), the Stratford Noon Hour Club, and various local card leagues. He was also a passionate angler who enjoyed fishing trips with close friends, particularly his longtime fishing companion John.
Thompson is survived by his wife of 60 years, Sally, daughters Marni and Heather, and extended family. He was predeceased by his parents, two brothers, and several in-laws.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Donations in his memory can be made to the Rotary Respite House in Stratford through W.G. Young Funeral Home.
