The week celebrating Canada Day saw dozens of opioid overdoses in Windsor.
The Windsor-Essex Opioid and Substance Use Notification System (WECOSS) issued an alert on Wednesday.
That alert showed that 29 opioid overdoses were reported between June 28 and July 4. Nineteen of those overdoses involved fentanyl.
WECHU data showed that June saw 110 calls to Emergency Medical Services for suspected opioid overdoses, the highest number for any month in 2026. That's more than double the average number of calls made in June of 2025.
The health unit has some safety tips for those who do consume opioids, they include never using alone, to avoid mixing substances, to call 911 immediately if something feels off, and to have naloxone ready.
