Downtown Mission gears up for Coldest Night of the Year

As the current cold snap continues, the Downtown Mission is reminding residents that one of its biggest fundraisers of the year is just a month away.

Extreme cold weather increases demand for warm meals, safe shelter, essential supplies, and compassionate support at the Mission.

"It's cold out there, and this weather reminds us just how critical our programs are during the winter months," said Executive Director Rukshini Ponniah-Goulin. "Every day and night, people in our community depend on us for warmth, meals, safety, and hope. The Coldest Night of the Year walk is one of the most important ways the community can help ensure we have the resources needed to respond."

This year's Coldest Night of the Year 2 km and 5 km walk is set for Saturday, February 28. The event is open to all ages for those who want to register to walk, donate, or volunteer.

The goal this year is $125,000, but already the Mission has raised more than $37,000 towards its goal.

Funds from the Coldest Night of the Year support warm meals, shelter services, essential supplies, hygiene items, and supportive programs for individuals experiencing homelessness.

"When you participate in the Coldest Night of the Year, you're not just walking," added Ponniah-Goulin. "You're helping ensure no one in our community feels forgotten, ignored, or alone, especially during the coldest, most dangerous time of the year."

Last year's event engaged 57 teams, including 357 walkers and 75 volunteers. It raised $125,865.50, and the Mission is hopeful that fundraising will surpass that total this year.
