A date has been scheduled to finally install the large steel beams to support a new Highway 40 overpass.
Construction of the new bridge started in 2025 and some of the infrastructure has been on site for months, waiting to be moved into place.
Signs were erected recently to notify drivers of an upcoming highway closure, which the Ministry of Transportation (MTO), via Sarnia-Lambton MPP Bob Bailey's office, said is planned next month.
"The closures on Highway 40, between Plank Road to Confederation Street, are required to accommodate the installation and construction of the new CNR Bridge west of the existing structure," an e-mail to Sarnia News Today read. "Highway closures are anticipated May 25 to 27, 2026, with May 28 to 30, 2026, scheduled as contingency days, as this work is weather dependent."
The bridge replacement contract was awarded to Facca Inc. in the fall of 2024 for $31.77 million.
Construction of the new four lane bridge over the CN Rail lines was expected to be completed next summer.
Sarnia News Today asked if the project was still on time and on budget, but did not get a reply to that question.
