Future still uncertain for Sarnia slots, as latest gaming payment received

The City of Sarnia has received its third quarter non-tax gaming revenue payment from the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG) for hosting Gateway Casinos Sarnia.

The city is getting $79,270 for the period from October to the end of December.

So far during this fiscal year, which started on April 1, the city has received $278,473.

Since Gateway Casinos opened in 1999, Sarnia has received over $28 million.

The OLG announced in December it was "working to extend" the Ontario Slots at Racetracks Program and continue operating the slots at Hiawatha Horse Park past March.

The news came after OLG said in September it would be closing the site in 2026.

In Point Edward, the village received a third quarter payment of $349,679 for hosting Starlight Casino.

Point Edward has received $1,197,913 in gaming revenue so far this fiscal year, and over $55 million since the gaming site opened in April 2000.

The OLG said payments are based on a formula in the Municipality Contribution Agreement, using a graduated scale of gaming revenue at the hosted site.
