Inter Township Fire Department partners with OPP to fight human trafficking

First responders in Grey and Bruce counties are taking active steps to combat a crime often mischaracterized as a major-city issue.

Members of the Inter Township Fire Department (ITFD), along with local community members and Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) representatives, recently completed specialized in-person training to identify and respond to human trafficking in rural areas.

The session was led by Detective Constable Melissa Barfoot, Human Trafficking Liaison with the OPP in Walkerton. Drawing on real-life case studies and firsthand field experience, Detective Constable Barfoot provided crew members with essential knowledge on recognizing warning signs, identifying potential victims during emergency responses, and connecting vulnerable individuals to vital local resources.

She stressed that human trafficking is not just a "big city" issue and continues to impact communities of all sizes across Grey and Bruce counties.

"The training emphasized the unique role first responders play when interacting with vulnerable individuals," noted a media release from the township. "While building trust in a brief encounter can be challenging, it can also provide a critical opportunity to offer assistance and support when it is needed most."

The ITFD proactively sought out the training as part of its ongoing professional development and dedication to public safety. By strengthening response capabilities and building awareness, local first responders are better equipped to notice subtle indicators that might otherwise go undetected.

Department leadership expressed sincere gratitude to Detective Constable Barfoot for sharing her expertise and thanked all participants for their active involvement in keeping the community safe.
