West Perth considering changes to rural speed limits and stop signs

The Municipality of West Perth is considering changes to speed limits and stop signs on rural roads, but residents will have an opportunity to weigh in before any decisions are made.

The issue was discussed during council's October 5, 2026 meeting, when municipal staff presented several options aimed at improving consistency across the local road network.

According to the municipality's council highlights, "Council had an extensive discussion about rural traffic safety, speed limits and stop signs across West Perth." The discussion included concerns about speeding, heavy trucks, agricultural vehicles and road conditions, along with the potential consequences of changing existing traffic controls.

However, council decided more public input is needed before moving forward, saying "no changes will be implemented at this time."

Instead, councillors directed staff to undertake a public consultation process before any of the proposed changes are considered for implementation.

Council also directed that a comprehensive traffic study be considered during the municipality's 2027 budget deliberations.

For now, existing speed limits and stop sign arrangements will remain unchanged. No timeline has been announced for the public consultation process.
