Owen Sound hosts household hazardous waste event

If you've been looking to clear out leftover household hazardous materials, you'll have a chance to do so safely this weekend in Owen Sound.

The City of Owen Sound has announced that the next Household Hazardous Waste Event is scheduled for Saturday, October 3. The drop-off day will take place at the Public Works Facility, located at 1900 20th Street East, running from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

This popular community program provides a convenient and environmentally safe way for residents to dispose of materials that should not enter standard waste streams. The collection is open to residents of Owen Sound as well as those living in neighbouring partner municipalities, including the Township of Chatsworth, Township of Georgian Bluffs, Municipality of Grey Highlands, and Municipality of Meaford.

To ensure the drop-off line moves as smoothly and quickly as possible, attendees are required to present valid identification showing a home address within one of the participating communities. Attendees must also bring a completed Household Hazardous Waste Form, which can be downloaded and printed ahead of time from the city's official website.

Safety remains a top priority for event staff and participants. Organizers remind residents that hazardous waste from commercial, industrial, or agricultural operations will not be accepted. Certain items are strictly prohibited, including infectious wastes like syringes, radioactive materials, explosives such as flares or ammunition, unidentified substances, and improperly contained or leaking items. Anyone transporting batteries to the event is asked to cover the terminals with clear or packing tape, or place each battery into an individual clear plastic bag to eliminate spark hazards.

Proper handling of hazardous material keeps dangerous chemical substances out of Ontario’s local landfills and waterways. For those unable to attend this Saturday, the final Household Hazardous Waste collection day of the year is scheduled for Saturday, October 24. Full details on accepted materials, safety protocols, and upcoming collection dates can be reviewed directly on the City of Owen Sound Waste Page.
