With roughly 70 millimetres of rain having fallen over the weekend and more on the way Monday, the Ausable Bayfield Conservation Authority is warning of minor flooding.
In a Flood Outlook and Water Safety flood message, the conservation authority stated initial rainfall on Saturday was absorbed, but ground conditions have now become saturated with a limited capacity to soak up additional moisture.
"Major flooding is not expected at this time, but intense rain can cause flows in rivers and streams to increase quickly and without warning," the conservation said. "Minor flooding remains possible, although any flooding is expected to be limited to low-lying, undeveloped floodplain areas."
Residents are asked to stay away from waterways, as the elevated, fast-moving water levels are hazardous and can make banks slippery and unstable. Municipal staff are advised to monitor local drainage problem areas where water is prone to ponding.
Environment Canada has a special weather statement in effect for much of midwestern Ontario, with another 10 to 20 millimetres of rain possible by Monday night. Sunshine is forecast to return on Tuesday.
The conservation's flood message will remain in effect until noon on August 29 and will be updated if required.
