Midwestern Ontario school boards continue hiring ahead of new school year

School boards across Midwestern Ontario are continuing to recruit teachers and supply staff with the start of the new school year just weeks away.

The Avon Maitland District School Board, which serves Huron and Perth counties, had a full-time permanent French as a Second Language teaching position at Maitland River Elementary School in Wingham still open.

Applications for the position were scheduled to close at 4 p.m. on August 17, 2026.

The board is also continuing to advertise opportunities for elementary and secondary occasional teachers and emergency supply teachers.

AMDSB describes emergency educators as people brought into schools when regular teaching coverage is unavailable.

"Local Level Emergency Educators are individuals who are interested in working with students and have an educational and/or work background that reasonably supports their interest and willingness to cover in schools in emergency situations," the board states on its careers page.

AMDSB says there were no individual schools specifically recruiting unqualified emergency educators through that program as of Monday, although broader emergency and occasional teacher postings remained listed.

Recruitment is also underway at the Bluewater District School Board in Bruce and Grey counties.

Bluewater is advertising a permanent full-time elementary teaching position at Highpoint Community School in Flesherton. The board was also looking for a temporary full-time mental health worker based in Chesley.

Bluewater notes teachers and several other education professions working in Grey-Bruce can qualify for the federal Canada Student Loan Forgiveness program.

The Huron-Perth Catholic District School Board is meanwhile accepting applications for occasional teachers, along with elementary uncertified instructors and several casual support positions.

"We have ongoing employment opportunities for permanent and casual employees, in both teaching and support staff positions," the Catholic board says.

The board employs more than 500 permanent staff at its 18 schools and Catholic Education Centre, while more than 300 casual employees provide temporary and daily supply coverage.

In Bruce and Grey, the Bruce-Grey Catholic District School Board is also preparing to expand classroom staffing this year.

Its approved 2026-27 budget adds 17.9 full-time-equivalent classroom teachers and four educational assistants as enrolment is projected to increase by 1.5 per cent to 5,168 students.

The current job postings do not necessarily mean classrooms will be without teachers when students return, as school boards continue hiring and adjusting staffing through the summer.

However, they show teacher and supply recruitment continuing across the region in the final weeks before the 2026-27 school year.
