A pair of events set for this weekend will allow people in the Owen Sound and Tobermory areas to safely dispose of their household hazardous waste.
Household hazardous waste drop-offs will be held on Saturday at Owen Sound's public works facility at 1900 20th Street East and at the St. Edmunds Landfill Site at 71 McArthur Road in Tobermory. The Owen Sound event will run from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m., while the Tobermory disposal will go from 8 a.m. until noon.
Some common accepted items include paints and stains, aerosols and solvents, propane tanks, fuel, used oil and oil filters, batteries and antifreeze, household cleaners, fluorescent lights, fertilizers and pesticides, pool chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and fire extinguishers.
Commercial, industrial, agricultural waste, PCB materials, ammunition and flares, and infectious waste such as syringes will not be accepted.
Owen Sound asks those planning to dispose of their waste at the event to bring valid identification with their home address, as well as a completed household hazardous waste form. The form can be downloaded from the city's website at OwenSound.ca/WasteForm.
For the drop-off event in Tobermory, Bruce County asks people to place all items in their trunk or truck bed before arrival and to stay inside their vehicle while staff unload the materials. This is asked to keep the potential line moving smoothly.
