Grey Highlands closes Rocklyn Arena due to air quality issues

The Municipality of Grey Highlands has to temporarily close the Rocklyn Arena due to air quality concerns.

Grey Bruce Public Health conducted an assessment of the building in the spring, and found ventilation deficiencies that fall below Technical Standards and Safety Authority requirements. The Health Unit said the Municipality needed to install several exhaust fans, one intake louver, and carbon monoxide (CO) sensors and oxygen sensors in the rink area and Zamboni room.

The total work was quoted at over $41,000 and needs to be completed in order to reopen for hockey this winter.

"Given the seriousness of the conditions identified, the Municipality made the decision to close the facility to prevent any potential exposure while further assessment and remediation planning are undertaken," read a Grey Highlands release. "Protecting the health and safety of staff, volunteers, user groups, renters, contractors, and members of the public remains our highest priority."

The Municipality says all affected renters and user groups have been contacted, and staff are actively assisting with alternative arrangements to help ensure planned events and activities can proceed with minimal disruption.

The arena has been around since 1975.
