Owen Sound residents will have another opportunity to give unwanted household items a new home when the city's second Goods Exchange Day of 2026 takes place on Saturday, July 18.
The event encourages residents to reuse items that are still in good condition rather than sending them to the landfill. It also provides an easy alternative to holding a garage sale for those looking to clear out unwanted belongings.
Residents can place reusable items at the curb in front of their homes beginning at 8 a.m. on July 18. Anyone searching for second-hand treasures is welcome to travel around the city and collect items that others no longer need.
Items commonly exchanged include furniture, sporting equipment, books, artwork, tools, toys, small appliances, doors, sinks and windows, along with other usable household goods. Any items that remain at the curb at the end of the day must be removed by 6 p.m.
To help others recognize that the items are available as part of the Goods Exchange Day event, the city asks residents to tie a white plastic bag to one of the items left at the curb.
Motorists are reminded to use caution throughout the day by watching for pedestrians and following all traffic laws as people browse neighbourhoods for reusable items.
The final Goods Exchange Day of 2026 is scheduled for Saturday, September 19.
Residents who have items that are not suitable for the exchange can also consider donating them through organizations such as the Canadian Diabetes Association Clothesline, the Kidney Clothes Donation Program, Habitat for Humanity ReStore, Mission Thrift Store, Value Village or the Salvation Army Thrift Store. Materials that cannot be donated can be taken to the Miller Waste Transfer Station.
The city also encourages residents to use the Recycle Coach app or visit the City of Owen Sound website for information about reuse, recycling and proper waste disposal options.
