Georgian Bluffs opens air quality relief centres during wildfire smoke pollution

The Township of Georgian Bluffs has opened air quality relief centres for anyone needing a breather from the poor air quality currently enveloping most of Ontario.

An Orange Level Air Quality Warning has been issued by Environment Canada due to the very poor air quality caused by smoke from wildfires in northwestern Ontario.

As a response, Georgian Bluffs has opened two relief centres, at the Shallow Lake Community Centre, which is open until 9 p.m. on Wednesday, July 15 and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Thursday, July 14. Additionally, the Council Chambers in the Township Office along Grey Road 18 is also open to anyone who wishes to get a break from the bad air.

Environment Canada warns that eye, nose, and throat irritation, headaches, and mild coughing are common symptoms some may experience during the weather event. More severe symptoms like wheezing and severe coughing should also be taken seriously. People who work outside should avoid strenuous activities outside and seek medical attention if experiencing symptoms.

Residents are reminded to avoid outdoor activity during very poor air quality and check in on neighbours and loved ones who may be at risk.
