Province increases funding to grow Kincardine school

The new Kincardine District Senior School should have space for over 1,000 students after the Ministry of Education recently approved an increased build capacity.

The school will now have capacity for 1,007 student spaces, up from the original plan of 881.

The Ontario government announced that as a result of the larger scope of the project and the increase in construction costs from the time of original approval, it will provide an additional investment of $31.3 million. That brings the province's total contribution to the new school to $57.7 million.

The province also gave Bluewater District School Board approval to issue the tender for the new secondary school.

"This is very exciting news and a significant leap forward in the progress of the new KDSS build project," said Jan Johnstone, Bluewater District School Board Vice-Chair. "Thank you to MPP (Lisa) Thompson and the Ministry of Education for continuing to recognize the growing needs within the community, and for their ongoing support in moving this project forward. Between the ministry’s investment and groundswell of local support, the learning spaces, features, and facilities within the new KDSS will be nothing short of exceptional once completed."

There's no timeline for when the school will be completed.

The school has also launched the BUILDKD+ Campaign, an effort to fundraise $4.5 million to support enhancements like a new track and field facility, high-tech education spaces, arts and performance areas and more flexible learning environments for students.
