The Humane Society of Kitchener Waterloo and Stratford Perth has issued an urgent public appeal for donations to cover the cost of an eight-week-old kitten's much-needed eye surgery.
The black-and-white kitten, named Reginald needs both of his eyes removed to live a pain-free, healthy life, the humane society said.
He arrived at the humane society as a stray on May 21, weighing less than a can of soup. His right eye had ruptured and his left eye had almost no vision.
While in foster care in the following weeks, Reginald gained strength. However, despite his veterinarian team's best efforts it has become medically necessary to remove not only the remnants of his ruptured right eye but also his left.
“Our priority now is his long-term health. Most patients like Reginald recover quite well,” said Marissa Crocker, a registered veterinary technician and clinic coordinator with the humane society. “Since Reginald’s sight has been limited for some time, we hope that adapting to no sight at all will go smoothly for him.”
The estimated cost of the surgery, scheduled for June 29, is approximately $7,500.
"Reginald has already shown incredible resilience. Now we’re asking the community to help him in this next step towards a pain-free life," added the organization's Director of Marketing and Community Engagement Dennis Roberts.
Any additional funds raised beyond what is needed to cover Reginald's medical bills will go toward other vulnerable animals.
