Dozens of commercial vehicle deemed unsafe during Grey-Bruce safety blitz

A four-day safety blitz targeting commercial vehicles in Grey and Bruce counties led to numerous charges and more than 40 vehicles being taken off the road.

Grey Bruce OPP and the Ministry of Transportation, in partnership with police services in Owen Sound, Saugeen Shores, Hanover and West Grey, conducted inspections of 95 commercial vehicles in the region last week. The focus of the initiative was to ensure commercial vehicle drivers comply with provincial legislation and safety rules.

The inspections found several violations, including mechanical deficiencies, improper documentation, and other safety-related infractions considered a risk to public safety. In total, 81 charges were laid and 41 vehicles were deemed unsafe and taken out of service.

"Unsafe vehicles on our roadways present a significant risk, not only to their operators but to all road users," police said in a statement released on Thursday. "Commercial motor vehicle safety remains a priority. Regular inspections and enforcement initiatives are essential in reducing collisions, preventing injuries, and saving lives."

Police remind all commercial vehicle drivers and owners that they are responsible for ensuring vehicles are properly maintained and operated in compliance with all applicable laws.
