Returning empty alcohol containers Wednesday will get you extra cash

People who have been stockpiling their empty alcohol cans and bottles will want to take them to the Beer Store on Wednesday.

In honour of Earth Day, the Beer Store will be offering an additional 20 per cent on the existing $0.10 and $0.20 deposit for alcohol containers purchased in Ontario.

“Annually millions of people return around 1.6 billion empty alcohol containers for reuse and recycling,” said Beer Store President Roy Benin. “In recognition of Earth Day, we want to invite people to visit a Beer Store to get 20 per cent more in deposit money back.”

Empty wine, spirit, and beer containers bought in Ontario will be accepted, but kegs are excluded from the offer.

The special Earth Day promotion applies only to containers returned to Beer Store locations, not those taken to authorized empty container dealers.

Consumers can use the locator on the Beer Store website to find the nearest store to take their empties. On thebeerstore.ca homepage, select 'returning empties' from the navigation bar, then 'where to return empties' from the drop-down menu.

More than 170 billion empty alcohol containers have been returned to the Beer Store for reuse or recycling throughout its nearly 100 years in operation.
