Midwestern Ontario is starting the week of March Break under the threat of significant snowfall.
Environment Canada has issued an orange-level snow squall watch for the entire region. It warns the squalls off Lake Huron and Georgian Bay could develop in the wake of a cold front that will see the temperature drop sharply Monday afternoon.
Between 20 to 40 centimetres of snow could fall by Tuesday afternoon.
"The highest accumulations are expected for locations east of Lake Huron," the national weather agency said. "Hazardous travel conditions as a result of heavy snow and extensive blowing snow will continue through Tuesday morning."
A special weather statement is also in place for midwestern Ontario with winds expected to gust between 70 to 90 kilometres an hour. They will begin in the southwest before shifting to the west Monday night. Residents should be prepared for tree limbs to break and possible utility outages as a result of the strong winds.
Conditions will improve across the region Tuesday afternoon.
