Support is available for the growing number of grandparents stepping in to raise their grandchildren across Huron and Perth Counties, often due to unexpected life circumstances that change the role they once imagined for themselves.
What many thought would be a time for occasional visits and special outings has instead become full-time parenting.
Rural Response for Healthy Children Executive Director Katrina Clarke said their peer support group is specifically for grandparents raising grandchildren.
"This is a situation that happens for all kinds of different reasons," Clarke explained. "Each situation is unique, but we know even the best case scenario is a disruption to the family life. So there is often some grief."
The group meets twice a month, giving participants a chance to share their stories and experiences with others in similar situations.
Clarke added that the number of families in this situation is increasing, and many caregivers benefit from connecting with others who understand the unique challenges involved.
"So it is grandparent led by people who have been in the situation, and who have walked this path," she added. "But we also have a staff member who is a parent support worker, who really facilitates the group, and makes sure that members can get access to the different services in the community."
Grandparents interested in the peer support group can contact the organization at 1-226-699-0707 or by email at mail@rrhc.on.ca for more information or to register.
