Owen Sound staff ready for pothole season

As spring approaches and snowbanks begin to melt, Owen Sound residents are reminded that pothole season is upon us.

The city’s Public Works team is ready to repair road damage in priority areas, and drivers are encouraged to use caution and report any problem spots.

Potholes form when water seeps under cracks in the asphalt.

“After the moisture freezes and expands, the weight of passing vehicles breaks the pavement,” a city bulletin explained. "Potholes often appear in the spring, due to melting snow and ice and more frequent freeze-thaw cycles as the average daily temperature increases."

Residents can assist by reporting potholes as soon as they see them.

“Depending on the location and the weather, staff are typically able to repair potholes within a few days of receiving a report,” said city staff.

Reports can be submitted through the City’s online “Report a Concern” form, ideally including the nearest property address and a photo of the pothole.

During winter, temporary repairs are made with cold-mix asphalt to keep roads safe, with more permanent fixes completed with hot asphalt once warmer conditions return.
