Owen Sound Sports Hall of Fame inducts 13 new members

The Owen Sound Sports Hall of Fame will induct a big class of local athletes, builders and teams this spring.

The Sports Hall of Fame Committee Members announced the 2026 class this week, which includes hockey, lacrosse and baseball legends, as well as a special merit induction of Mat Eckert, the local coach and teacher that died in a car accident.

The class includes nine athletes: Brian Lemon, Mat MacLeod, Mike MacLeod, Ryan Thompson, Tom Joseph White, Tyler Andrew Gibbons, Mark William Shortt, Brittanny Smith and Cecil Andrew Harold Olmsted.

Three coaches will also be inducted: Chet Couture, Glenn Breadner and Steve Brown.

Finally four teams will recognized: the 2003 John Thompson Movers AA Fastball Team, the 1995-96 Owen Sound BDO Minor Atom Hockey Team, the 2001 Scenic City Automotive Crunch Fastball Team and the 2019 Shallow Lake U19 Fastball Team.

Elections and inductions are held every two years.

The Awards Ceremony is scheduled for Friday, May 8, at the Harry Lumley Bayshore Community Centre.
