Huron Perth Public Health (HPPH) is warning of the ill effects of exposure to extreme cold during a nasty cold spell for the region.
Temperatures this week have wind chill values hitting near -30 C at times, with Environment Canada putting the region under a yellow level cold warning.
HPPH points out that the extreme cold can cause injuries including frostnip or mild frostbite, frostbite, and hypothermia, all of which can be prevented. Additionally, cold weather can worsen existing health conditions, particularly those affecting the heart or lungs.
Health risks are highest for people experiencing homelessness, older adults, infants and children, people with pre-existing health conditions such as heart or lung disease, and those who work or enjoy recreation outdoors.
To stay safe, HPPH recommends checking the weather, checking on others, dress appropriately with plenty of layers, and stay dry. You should also keep an emergency kit in your vehicle.
