Bruce County residents gain $1.3 million in free tax program

A free tax program has made a big difference in Bruce County this year, returning over $1.3 million in refunds and benefits to local residents.

The Community Volunteer Income Tax Program (CVITP), administered by the Bruce County Public Library, has wrapped up its eighth successful year.

Director of Library Services Brooke McLean says the program offered free tax preparation assistance to individuals and families with low to moderate incomes

"Our volunteers filed 443 tax returns, and as a result of that, residents are getting back over $1.3 million in tax refunds, as well as benefits such as the GST credit and the Canada child tax benefit," explained McLean.

The program was expanded this year to five locations across the County, with Lucknow joining Port Elgin, Walkerton, Chesley, and Kincardine.

In addition to filing taxes, volunteers also took the opportunity to educate clients about available programs such as the GST credit, Canada Child Benefit, and various seniors’ grants.

"It really eases the burden of getting income taxes done, both by not requiring people to pay to have their taxes done when they have minimal income, but also by offering to do it in a neutral and welcoming space," added McLean.

Mark Goetz, Chair of the Bruce County Public Library Board, credited the program’s success to the hard work of its fifteen dedicated volunteers.

“We are grateful to the volunteers who made this year's CVITP such a success,” Goetz said. "Their generosity in donating their time and expertise has helped residents navigate tax season and supported BCPL in our commitment to being a trusted community connector."

The initiative also highlighted the value of community partnerships, with the Bruce County Human Services Department working alongside the Library to ensure that residents accessing County services were connected to tax filing support.

McLean said the program continues to demonstrate the importance of accessible services for residents, helping families access critical financial benefits and improve their financial well-being.
