Blonde, brown, or red, short or long, a new exhibit coming to the Bruce County Museum and Cultural Centre promises to examine all things hair.
"Disheveling! An ExtraordinHAIRY Exhibition" opens at the museum in Southampton late next week. Produced by the Sherbrooke Museum of Nature and Science, in collaboration with Télé-Québec and Heritage Canada, the hands-on exhibit will offer a look at the science behind hair and its many functions.
"This exhibition really dives into everything about hair and it covers topics from humans to animals and even plants. Some things we don't even necessarily think about - do plants have hair or not? Those questions will be answered in the exhibit," said Museum Director Cathy McGirr. "It will engage the young population and every age in between because it is very hands on."
Museum members will get a sneak peak of the exhibit, which is presented by Ontario Power Generation and Blackburn Media radio station 101.7 The One, next Thursday from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. The exclusive evening will include a quiz show on hairstyles through the decades, a chance to try on foam wigs of iconic hairstyles like those of Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley and Marie Antoinette, and a hair chalk station to experiment with bold new temporary colours.
Doors will open to the general public next Friday with the exhibit remaining at the museum until September 1.
"It's a really hands-on, family-friendly exhibition," said McGirr. "A lot of science involved in it with different stations that will include what is hair? talking about what hair actually is or the colour of your hair, the purpose of your hair. There are some really great sections about true or false and guessing games. It's a very interesting way to make science fun."
McGirr added that between the exhibit opening and the end of the school year a number of classes are scheduled to visit the museum to see it.
