Maroons beat Elmira, lose to St. Thomas

The Chatham Maroons were only able to win one of their games over the weekend.

The team travelled to Elmira on Saturday, where they beat the Sugar Kings 5-3.

It took just over seven minutes into the game for the Maroons to grab a 2-0 lead. Ewan McChesney scored his 17th of the season from Jason Harding and Jaxon Priddle before Dylan Richter got his ninth goal from Xandre Aitken and Bo Doxtator.

Elmira would tie the game before the intermission after scoring twice in eight seconds.

Aidan Edwards gave the Maroons another lead in the second period with his 10th goal. Getting the only assist was Santiago Jimenes.

Richter extended the lead in the third period with his second goal of the game. Carter Chadwick and Ian Lachance with the assists.

Capping the scoring for the Maroons was Matthew Crawford, who scored his first career Greater Ontario Hockey League (GOHL) goal.

Samuel DiBlasi made 32 saves for the win.

The Maroons were back in action the next day, losing at home 6-5 in overtime to the St. Thomas Stars.

Trevor Zanutto opened the scoring with his 26th goal. McChesney and Carter Kucher with the helpers.

St. Thomas would tie the game before Aitken got his sixth goal from Crawford and Doxtator.

The next three goals were scored by St. Thomas. Getting the Maroons back within a goal was Aydan Doyle. His seventh goal was unassisted.

St. Thomas got their fifth goal early in the third period. However, the Maroons would tie the game after two goals from Chadwick. Assisting on Chadwick's 20th goal were Richter and Zanutto, while Lachance got the only helper on Chadwick's 21st goal.

It took St. Thomas less than two minutes in overtime to get the game-winner, coming off the stick of Eloan Le Gallic.

DiBlasi made 40 saves in the loss.

The Maroons will be back in action on January 23, on the road against St. Thomas.
