Chatham man dead after being hit by train

A Chatham man is dead after being struck by a train.

Chatham-Kent police said the pedestrian was struck by an eastbound passenger train on the rail tracks in the area of Northwood Line just east of Chatham on Sunday afternoon.

The 34-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene, despite life-saving emergency measures taken by the train operator, said police.

Police noted the rail corridor was temporarily closed while the investigation was underway.

Police also said no further details will be released out of respect for the grieving family.

"Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones affected by this incident. On behalf of all members, we extend our deepest condolences during this incredibly difficult time, and we ask that the community respect the family’s privacy as they grieve," said police.
