Elevated bacteria levels at Erieau Public Beach

One of the most popular beaches in Chatham-Kent is not recommended for swimming on one of the hottest weekends of the year.

Chatham-Kent Public Health reported tests done on August 11, 2025 showed that Erieau Public Beach has high levels of E. Coli bacteria, but the rest have tested low and are safe for swimming.

Mitchell's Bay Beach, Getty's Beach by the Wheatley pier, Clearville Beach, Howard Township Beach, Pier Road Beach, and Bates Beach all have low levels of bacteria and are safe for swimming, according to the health unit.

CK public health officials said the August 11, 2025 water samples will mark the end of beach testing this summer.

Every summer, CK Public Health collects water samples from public beaches within Chatham-Kent testing the water for E. Coli bacteria.

"Remember, these results only reflect that exact moment in time. Beach goers are encouraged to make an informed decision about beach quality in real time before you go swimming," said officials. "You are the best judge of whether the water is safe."
