Essex to discuss need for bylaws governing e-bikes and e-scooters

Essex Town Councillors will vote on Monday night whether to ask administration to write up a report determining if the town needs new by-laws to govern the use of e-bikes and e-scooters.

Mayor Sherry Bondy introduced the notice of motion earlier this month. The motion calls on town staff to look at what neighbouring municipalities are doing about it and work with the Ontario Provincial Police.

The vote comes after police in LaSalle said officers laid 12 charges against riders or their parents over the summer, and Windsor Police charged a 14-year-old with popping wheelies on a minibike on Tecumseh Road East on Thursday.

In August, the Canadian Paediatric Society reported 57 severe injuries related to e-scooters last year. It also said there were ten deaths among children under 18.

The Canadian Institute for Health Information also reported 498 e-scooter hospitalizations from 2023 to 2024.

In Ontario, riders on e-bikes and e-scooters are supposed to be at least 16, and if they're under 18, they're required to wear a helmet.
