A Sarnia man is facing charges in connection with thefts from commercial air conditioning units in the city's downtown core.
On Monday October 26, city police responded to reports of vandalism and a theft in progress on Lougar Ave.
Officers spotted a man nearby who was allegedly in possession of parts from a nearby AC unit.
The 26-year-old, who was not named by police, is facing the following charges:
- Mischief Over $5,000
- Theft Over $5,000
- Breach of Probation
- Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Over $5,000
Police believe the accused is connected to a larger network of individuals who have been targeting the AC units.
They released a photo of a suspect in early September.
The Sarnia Police Service (SPS) is encouraging business owners to remain aware of vandalism and theft risk to AC units.
They're being told to ensure the area around the unit is well-lit, that security cameras are in place and working, and that signage indicates the area is under video surveillance.
Police said these small steps can act as a crime deterrent and also assist the police with their investigation should any damage occur.
SPS is offering Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design assessments by calling the Community Engagement Officer at 519-344-8861 ext. 6214.
Anyone that notices damage to an AC unit and/or enclosure, is asked to report it over the phone at 519-344-8861 or online at www.sarniapolice.ca.
