CBSA to end commercial driver registration program

A seldom-used program to expedite commercial driving across the border is being scrapped.

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) will end the Commercial Driver Registration Program (CDRP) on September 1.

The border agency said that the decision was made after a routine review of its programs, to ensure border security is maintained.

"The CBSA is ending the CDRP because few people use it and it duplicates another program called the Free and Secure Trade (FAST)," read a media release from the CBSA.

The FAST program is a trusted-traveller program run jointly by the CBSA and U.S. Customs and Border Protection. It's similar to the NEXUS program used by low-risk travellers in passenger cars.

The CBSA said the FAST program gets 12,000 applications a year. The CDRP only received 158 applications during fiscal year 2025-26.

FAST lanes are available at the Ambassador Bridge and Gordie Howe International Bridge in Windsor, and the Blue Water Bridge in Point Edward.
