Impaired driver flees Sarnia police

An impaired driver has been arrested and charged after fleeing from Sarnia police.

At 2:27 a.m. Friday morning, officers saw a car swerving on Indian Road. Police attempted a traffic stop, but the driver did not slow down, instead, they sped onto Wellington Road. Police stopped chasing the car due to the rate of speed.

Roughly 10 minutes later, police responded to Wellington Street and Lansdowne Avenue following a report of a crash. Officers went to the scene and saw tire marks across the front lawn of a home. A utility box, as well as mailboxes, were hit during the collision. Police found pieces of the suspect's vehicle, which they identified as a black 2022 to 2024 Honda Civic.

At 4:03 a.m., officers saw the vehicle speeding on Lakeshore Road. Back-up was called before attempting a traffic stop. Police say the car, with obvious front-end damage, pulled into a convenience store parking lot on Cathcart Avenue minutes later.

According to police, the driver noted their presence and fled the scene on foot. Officers chased after him, and the man was taken into custody with no further incidents.

The 31-year-old Sarnia man was charged with flight from police officers, failure to remain, mischief under $5,000, operation while impaired, and operation while over the legal limit.
