Lighting competition registration opens this weekend

If you've been busy getting the house decked out for the holidays, why not show it off?

Celebration of Lights organizers are asking homeowners to register their displays for the annual lighting competition.

"We really want people who are going to take on the spirit of this whole thing and says 'hey, we want to go over and above and really light up our house, light up our street, light up our community,' and that's what we want to showcase," said Board Chair Dean Holtz.

He said online registration opens on Saturday, November 22 at www.celebrationoflights.com.

"Usually it's anywhere from about 25 to 35 [homes]," said Holtz. "And we do have requirements, like we do say you have to have at least 1,000 lights because it is a competition, we want the best of the best."

Holtz said awards will be given to the top three displays, as well as People's Choice.

"And then the fifth prize is the Kids Award," said Holtz. "So when the judges go out, it's a group of about three adult judges, but there's also three children judges that go with them in the limo. And the kids choose their own favourite, and it's always different than what the adults choose."

Commercial businesses can get in on the fun too.

"We added that back last year," said Holtz. "It used to be done years ago and then it just kind of fell by the wayside and we thought let's bring this back and motivate businesses to really decorate as well, so there is also a commercial prize."

Online registration will be open until Sunday, December 7 and judging will take place the following week.
