The Town of Petrolia is hoping to encourage new members to join a youth committee in the new year.
The appointed group will act as a sub-committee for the Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee, providing insight on the needs and resources for youth, engaging with local service clubs, and becoming more involved in the community.
"One of the things that the previous committee did was run a Youth Engagement Summit, so they learned a lot about how to host and plan a big event," said Director of Parks, Recreation, and Facilities Julie Bullock. "It really helped them learn about those organization skills and things they can carry into lots of other areas."
Bullock said the youth committee launched a couple of years ago, and there are currently four members, but none are within the 12 to 18 age group.
"Last year, we had about three in that age group that were on it but they've all moved away and gone on to school," she said. "So we're looking for some more to sit in and fill on this committee."
Bullock said the committee is open to those who either live or go to school in the Town of Petrolia.
"They could be outside of the town proper and perhaps they attend LCCVI, St. Philip, Queen E, Hillcrest, or Lambton Centennial," she said.
Applications will be accepted until 11:59 p.m. on December 8.
"The first meeting would be in the new year," Bullock said. "Being a sub-committee, they don't have a specific meeting calendar, so it would just be as needed."
Applications can be submitted online through the town's website.
