Stratford police warn business community of ongoing scams

Stratford Police Service is warning the local business community about a pair of recurrring scams that have resulted in financial losses.

According to police, one scam involves fraudsters inserting messages into existing email chains using addresses that closely resemble legitimate ones. The messages will request changes to payment information, redirecting business payments to accounts controlled by the scammer.

Police suggest that businesses verify any requests to change accounts payable information with a trusted contact over the phone.

The second scam that has been reported involves the theft of business cheques from outgoing mail compartments in Canada Post community mailboxes. According to police, fraudsters alter the payee information on the cheques and deposit them.

Officials suggest that businesses mailing cheques take them directly to Canada Post rather than leave them in community mailboxes that are not monitored.
