The Bruce County Public Library is marking Ontario Public Library Week with a celebration of stories.
Designed around the theme Loud for Libraries, this year's initiative highlights the daily impact of public library systems while actively challenging long-standing perceptions of libraries as strictly quiet spaces.
"Today's libraries aren't the libraries of the past," says Brooke McLean, Director of the Bruce County Public Library. "They are vibrant hubs of learning, creativity, discovery and connection. At BCPL, people come together to explore new ideas, access free resources, participate in programs, and build meaningful community connections."
Loud for Libraries: A Celebration of Stories, takes place for Thursday, October 22, 2026, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Port Elgin Branch. Bringing together representatives from the Ontario Library Association, the Federation of Ontario Public Libraries, and the Bruce County Public Library, the gathering highlights the essential role libraries play in communities across the province.
Open to all members of the public, attendees will have the opportunity to discover BCPL's Digital Human Library initiative, browse the specialized Library of Things collection, enjoy refreshments, meet with library leaders, and see firsthand how libraries foster stronger social ties across all age groups.
To mark Ontario Public Library Week, BCPL has featured the voices of local leaders and library champions across social media platforms to recognize the vital role these institutions play in building strong communities. The line-up of celebrations included a diverse mix of special programming and events, highlighted by appearances from children's author Kevin Sylvester alongside author, journalist, and broadcaster Ted Barris.
October is also Canadian Library Month. The overarching campaign also serves to honor the dedicated workforce that keeps library operations running every day.
"We're celebrating loudly for BCPL staff this month,” says Library Chair Mark Goetz. “Every program, recommendation, community event, and welcoming library experience is made possible by the dedicated people who work behind the scenes and at the front line every day. Through their knowledge, creativity, and commitment to service, BCPL staff bring the library to life by connecting people with resources, opportunities, and each other."
