OPP promoting safety this Thanksgiving weekend

The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) would be thankful for good drivers this long holiday weekend.

They want everyone to practice safe driving behaviours so they can get to their destinations and be with family.

The OPP is joining police services across Canada for Operation Impact, an annual national traffic safety initiative led by the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police.

Police said the campaign supports Canada's Road Safety Strategy and focuses on high-risk driving behaviours that contribute to serious collisions.

They include alcohol and drug use - which are the leading factors in fatalities over the last decade - and failing to wear safety equipment, such as seatbelts, helmets and lifejackets.

Officers will also be patrolling trails and waterways, targeting unsafe activity and promoting safety.

Over the last 10 years in Ontario, Thanksgiving weekends have had the second highest number of fatalities among all long weekends, including 13 deaths last year alone.
