Man charged after woman, Good Samaritan assaulted

A Good Samaritan was assaulted while trying to stop an attack on a woman in downtown Stratford. 

Stratford police received multiple 911 calls about a man hitting the woman with a large metal bar in the area of Albert Street and Waterloo Street South around 1:30 p.m. last Friday. A person who was passing by intervened to stop the attack and was also assaulted.

The man reportedly left before police arrived.

The woman was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Police credit the person who intervened in the attack for preventing further harm to the woman.

A suspect was arrested a short time later after a brief foot chase with officers. He was taken into custody without incident, police said.

A 27-year-old Stratford man is charged with two counts of assault with a weapon and one count each of aggravated assault, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, and resisting arrest.
