Locals may notice some activity at Boiler Beach this summer, as a licensed marine archaeological survey of the SS Erie Belle will take place.
The steam tug exploded in Lake Huron in November 1883, after trying to free the grounded schooner, J.N. Carter.
This summer, volunteers with the Ontario Marine Heritage Committee will conduct the survey to document and better understand the piece of local marine history before natural conditions and time further affect the site.
No artifacts will be recovered or removed as part of this work.
Work begins this week and will continue periodically into August, depending on weather conditions and volunteer availability.
The public is asked to respect the protected nature of the site and to avoid attempting to locate, approach, or interfere with survey activities.
